Speaker suspends Parliamentary proceedings over leader of opposition saga|

Speaker of Parliament Catherine Gotani Hara has abruptly suspended Parliament proceedings following disagreement over the position of the leader of opposition crisis.

It all started when Speaker of Parliament asked leadership of both benches (from the opposition and government) to confirm what was discussed during the business committee meeting which was held on Wednesday last week.

As Kondwani Nankhumwa was about to take the floor to confirm what was discussed in the business committee, Thyolo Thava MP Mary Navicha also stood up claiming to be the leader of opposition resulting into chaos.

Speaker Catherine Gotani Hara intervened to declare that Nankhumwa is the rightful candidate for the post but this did not yield anything as MPs from the opposition Democratic progressive Party (DPP) stood up to protest.

“I recognize Hon. Nankhumwa because my hands are tied due to the court injunction” she said while asking Navicha to sit down and paveway for Nankhumwa leading to a protest from within the DPP camp.

The move forced the speaker to suspend Parliament proceedings for 10 minutes.
